FORMER WBO and WBA world welterweight champion Antonio Margarito of Mexico will return to the ring on May 8 against Roberto Garcia of Texas in a ten round bout at La Feria de San Marcos in Aguascalientes, Mexico.
The controversial ex-champion's name has been floated around as a possible opponent of WBO welterweight champ Manny Pacquiao after his run for a congressional seat.
Margarito and Paquiao have the same promoter, Bob Arum. If talks for Pacquiao fighting the winner of Shane Mosley vs Floyd Mayweather will fail once again, then Arum can easily set up a match-up between Pacquiao and Margarito.
Arum wishes that Margarito's next fight will be in the US possibly at the spanking Cowboys Stadium during the summer if Texas opts to pardon the Mexican boxer known as the Tijuana Tornado. Arum said he'd like to give Margarito a shot at Pacquiao later this year as a second option if negotiations for a Mayweather-Pacquiao bout fail.
Margarito, just like every name boxer in the 140-147 lb weight range- wants to get a crack at Pacquiao. He said that Pacquiao has his title and he knows he can beat the Filipino boxing icon.
But Margarito will have to hurdle the The National Association of Boxing Commissions' reluctance to have his license reinstated in the US. Margarito was stripped of his license to fight in America after he was caught using hand wraps that had plaster-like elements before his 2009 bout against Shane Mosley.
